Google "Optima 6 volt battery" and buy one online. You don't want any other type of 6-volt battery in your VW.

That would be my first choice. What about mounting?

Any way you want. On my '66 sunroof I made an elevation tray from a plastic kitchen drawer silverware holder. I mounted the battery on its side and installed new battery cables. It fits very neatly under the back seat. On my '63, my buddy fabbed up a steel bracketry mount with strap to hold the battery upright.

I guess that answers the question about it being too tall to mount standing up. :?

It makes no difference if it stand up or is on its side. The only thing they don't recommend is upside down.

Napa has the right 6v battery too, they got mine next morning for around $100 no complaints

NAPA has it. The part# is 5019L. It has 575 cold cranking amps.
Fully charged it's just like the original. They last about 4 years.
And the original 66 VW battery cover fits it.
My lat wo Optima 6 volt batteris didn't last 6 years long and they just floated around under the back seat.
See you NAPA store to order one. Made by Johnson Controls, just like Die Hard, Interstate, etc.

I have three 6-volt Optimas, and my oldest is still going strong after (counting fingers) 10 years! I'd never go back to corroded cables and rust holes through the floor. But it's just a friendly difference of opinion.
