Hurst Shifter info needed, please!

Post by 1966veedub »

So I have this non-running '66 that has a Hurst Shifter, and I know nothing about it. I'm wanting to know if I should keep it in the bug (is it worth keeping?), and how it's supposed to work. What does the trigger looking mechanism do? I'm thinking about getting rid of it in favor of a standard shifter with an ivory knob because I like the look. I've seen a couple of other '66s with this same type on it.

Thanks in advance!

Vintage, and valuable. depending on how old it is it could be a hundred, maybe 150 bucks. If you're going to sell it, look up comparable ones on the samba and see where you fit in with yours. odds are good if you price it right it'll go quickly. I'd offer to buy it but I'm broke. :) The trigger's your reverse lockout.

Cool, thanks for the info. Can I safely assume a regular shifter will fit in it's place if I decide to get rid of the Hurst shifter?

absolutely. You may need to get the reverse lockout plate for a stock shifter, I think the hurst may have done away with that but can't remember. That is an inexpensive part and often you can find them at swap meets or the like too.

The Hurst does away with the stock reverse plate, so you'll need that as well if you revert to stock.

That's not the original knob on the Hurst.
