What's correct for my 66 ??

Post by fontana66 »

Hi all.

Just recently imported a sunroof '66 in to the UK from CA and going through a very thorough resto. Will be trying to keep everything as original as possible with the exception of upgrading the running gear, trans and motor.

Can anybody confirm exactly what type of external door handles my car should have ? The round button type is a mid-late 66 / 67 evolution isn't it. I think it should have the square button type but is there any differentiation between the cast type handle and the pressed polished steel type. I am looking to acquire some decent handles and want to ensure that I get the correct type.

I haven't got the VIN to hand right now but will post it later.

I'm sure I will have more of these kind of questions so any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben.

Yes, the door handles switched midrun for the '66 model year. your VIN should help you track down which you need.

Yes, the door handles changed mid year, so whatever type is on it now is probably the type you need. Even though I have both types, I've never checked for interchangability.

All '66 bugs had the stainless steel wrapped handles, both styles, and not the plated pot metal. Those are earlier. It should also have the stainless steel wrapped hood handle as well.

handles

Hi there,
Don't know if you can see in th picture but my bug was bought from the original owner who bought it straight from the Wolfsburg factory in 1966. The handles shown are completely original. I have other "stock" photos of my bug too. I have since put on Flat 4 BRMs and lowered the front end as it had the original cross-ply tyre which were just a little scary!

Hi Ben,

I just completed a nut and bolt restoration on a US '66. Everything is correct including the engine. To do it I used reference photos of a 7000 mile original and untouched '66 as well as my own car and a donor '66. and sought many NOS and correct used parts. So if you need reference to the photos feel free to ask.

Oh btw I'm a Brit living in the US, you'll maybe spot me on Vzi and pre67.

Ben,
I just bought a 66 bug, also with RH drive, and apparently it's the same color as yours as well. Thought I was looking at my ride when I saw your pic!

Nice.

Rick
