Well, here we go again! Most of you may have read my post about working on the master cylinder of my 66 beetle. If not, you can click here, to read it. I affectionally refer to it as “The hell I made for myself”. Well just when you think your troubles are over, another one rears its ugly head, because as all vintage beetle folks know, it’s always something.

However, it is getting to the point where I would just like to go one year without something needing to be repaired.
As I pulled out of the shop to go to the VW meeting on Saturday, I noticed brake fluid coming from the rear passenger side wheel. I took a precursory look under the car, and it seems to me that the leak must be coming from the brake cylinder. Of course it is, because it couldn’t be something as simple as a bleeder valve being loose.
On the positive side, this is exactly why I moved to a dual master cylinder set-up. At the very least I would have brakes should the rears run completely out of fluid. Fortunately, this is not a whopper of a leak, but it needs to be addressed quickly.
Complicating matters further is the not that holds the brake drum on for the rear wheel. It just happens to be huge (36MM) and torqued to 250-foot pounds. It will require a special tool to remove it, and fortunately for me my buddy Scott has that.
So, here we go again. Garage Art 2024!
So, when Scott and I carve out some time, we will do the transaxle lube first. Next, we will move onto the rear wheel. Then I bet I’ll need to order parts. So, the hell continues with these brakes.
To end on a positive note though, I absolutely loved driving the beetle yesterday.
