The beetle is in the shop, which at this point is probably a good thing. The weather coming our way is going to be below freezing for three days with the nights in the single digits.
The freezing weather is nothing new to places like Wisconsin, but down here it gets ugly. Keep in mind we don’t have basements so the slabs conduct a fair amount of cold and there is always a chance that the plumbing could freeze.

Typically, in the winter I keep the shop at around forty degrees. However, with single digits coming our way for 3 days, I think I’ll turn off the power to the heat pump, drain the water lines, and add RV antifreeze to the P-Traps. Given that electricity for me is at .14/KWH, I think it just makes sense to pause the heat out there. Hopefully the shop retains most of its heat over the next few days and then i can boot it back on again when things warm up.
Sadly, this would probably be great weather for a drive, but I heard they have put brine down on some of the major roadways. I would never drive any of my cars on a salted road, unless I could immediately hose them off afterwards.
I do have a VW meeting coming up in two weeks so I am hoping the streets will be clean by then. I like driving in the cold weather, much more than the hot.
So, until then, my little blue bug can stay in the shop and wait out the weather. I will spend my time focusing on making sure that the rest of the house is protected from the impending cold blast.
Stay Safe!
