If you’re thinking of buying a classic beetle, you might be surprised at just how much they are selling for.

I’m going to start by just giving you information on the latest 2023 sales of the 1966 model. Keep in mind, all values hinge on originality and condition. I looked at a few sites to come up with some averages.

The highest sale in 2023, was a 1966 sedan, in Georgia for 53,000 dollars. The lowest I could find that sold was 5,900 dollars and it was not in good shape at all.

Now of course there are many sites that list beetles. Even on thesamba.com (which has an enormous classified section),it was hard to find a decent 1966 for under 8,000 dollars. Most of those needed a lot of work. The nice 1966 sedans were upwards of 20,000 dollars.

Now, you can always get a “project” car, but be careful what you wish for. Beetles that are in rough shape take an incredible amount of time and money to restore. You may get part way into your restoration and wonder why you didn’t start with a bug you could just turn the key on, and drive away.

Parts become another issue on project cars. Finding good aftermarket parts is a challenge. Click here to read my post on that! Even good quality replacement body panels differ in quality among aftermarket suppliers.

Some people really like projects, and I admire anyone that keeps a beetle from the junkyard. If you are one of those folks – Thank You! You are saving a piece of history. If you have decent welding skills, and the mechanical knowledge then perhaps a project car works for you.

Now if your looking for a nice beetle in good condition you may want to go to a couple VW beetle car shows. There are always beetles for sale there. In fact, that is how I sold my Sea Sand 1966 beetle in 2006. The buyers got an incredibly nice car as it had been restored, and had a new engine and transmission. I’m sure it’s still going strong.

It’s surprising that the beetle values are so high given the economy. That’s a good thing if your wanting to sell your beetle, but who would do that?!!! If your a buyer, take your time and decide how much your willing to spend and what condition you want the beetle to be in knowing a project car will be expensive.

Either way I’m looking forward to seeing you on the road!
