Fuel Gauge

Post by Teal »

When I found my '66 her fuel gauge only worked from about positions at about 12 noon and lower, so I was able to at least tell when I was getting low on gas. The floater assembly had a leak in the moving part which prevented me from topping off the tank, and I assumed the float was the problem.

Well 1 new fuel floater assembly later, the leak is fixed but my gauge still operates the same. Any ideas?

Thanks!

You can adjust them by changing the tension on the cable. Problem is, many times the cable's stretched out so far that you can't get it to adjust correctly. I think you can get replacement cables, go see Gilbert at Doug's Bugs n Bunnies and see if he can order you a replacement.

If not, I'd honestly rather have it tell me when it's empty than when it's full, so I know when to panic. :) That's how mine works. I'm too lazy to replace the cable.

Check to make sure the cable is moving freely. (Since you replaced the float I assume this is fine.) There's an adjustment on the back of the gauge you can fiddle with, and if all else fails, find a good used gauge and replace it.

Sometimes there are bends in the cable that prevent it from sliding correctly. You could try making a brace for it if you see any bends/creases.

My gauge only tells me when empty and never registers much higher than half mark. I can move the send lever til it reads full but the fuel alone can't move it far enough to read full. Can this be fixed without replacing parts? Maybe I need a new sending unit and float? or is this really a gauge issue?

I've got good movement in the cable, I'm going to have to check the adjustment on the back of the gauge. Too bad I didn't troubleshoot it better when I had the wiper assembly out, but I'll work around it. The good thing is it is accurate from 1/4 tank and lower, so I'm not too worried about it. I'll let you know what I figure out, hopefully the adjustment on the rear of the gauge will help out.

I did fix the lamp though, the spring assembly inside the bulb housing was worn out. Keep an eye out for my posts about LED mods, I'm going to convert my dash lights over to blue LED's eventually.

As long as the gauge registers correctly from half-a-tank to empty, who cares if it registers full?
