emergency flasher switch & hi-beams

Post by Teal »

Does anyone know if a single pole, single throw switch will trigger my emergency flashers? Same question for my high beams, the wiring off my turn signal is shot so high beams won't work there without a rebuild, and the emergency flasher switch did not come with the car...

From the research I've done, the hi-beams need a momentary trigger rather than a spst switch, but I can't find any good specs on what makes the flashers blink...

Comments? Thanks!

IIRC turn signal flashers are what makes the signals and emergency lights blink. Your switch just throws power to it.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do with these relays, they are just used to take a low amp/volt trigger and allow you to operate something that requires more amps/volts than the switch or activation device can handle.

An SPST and SPDT are extremely similar except the later has one input with two switcheable outputs depending on what state it is in. The SPST is what you would use for a fog light or headlight in most cases if you were to completely rewire things with an aftermarket switch activating the relay.

So I got my emergency flashers working with a off the shelf pushbutton switch, by connecting ground to one side of the switch and the other side to "-S" on my flasher relay. Problem is, the turn signal light isn't flashing on my speedo. It works fine when I engage the turn signal arm, but no go when the emergency switch is engaged. From the wiring diagram it looks like there might have been a backlight in the original swich, is that my problem? If so, can I jumper 49a to BJ and make my speedo turn signal indicator do the same job?

Either way, could someone tell me what the black, green & white striped wire does that comes off 49a? The diagram shows it going to my steering column... Anyone?

Also, what's the easiest way to pull the hi-beam swich on the turn signal arm? Seems like it's got a bad contact or something, gonna have to pull & inspect, hopefully without taking the steering wheel off.
