Slipping starter

Post by KKV270 »

Hi.
Im experiencing a small problem that seems to be worsening...my starter is "slipping".. It just spins & doesn't engage the flywheel successfully in all attempts. I inspected the Bendix...it is ok...& so is the flywheel (both fairly new...recent replacements).
The matter has been an experience I've had since I replaced the starter & bell-housing starter bushing..though it would only do that in 1-10. Now it seems to be 8-10.
I suspect probably the bushing might have wore out for some reason (probably dust that has chiselled it.....thats the most Id just suspect).... Before I get to replacing the bushing, could there be any other probable culprit? NB..it is as though the solenoid throws the Bendix past the flywheel at times.......but the lock on the starter shaft is in place perfect.....what could be happening??

I've never seen anybody with so many little problems!

Did you ever install a hard start relay? With the key off, take a narrow screwdriver and try shorting the the battery cable connection on the starter to the solenoid connection (push-on connection). If it cranks every time, you need the relay.

Blue Baron, I guess for a car this old that had been wasting away for 12yrs before I got it 3 yrs ago, any problem is bound to come up....and hence, thanks to this forum and guys like you who get me going.

Well, I swopped the Bendix and worked on my chock which was also a cause of a hard start issue...now I'm back to half-kicks & minimal starter engagements.

Thanks.
