Braking in an engine

Hi Guys.

Some advice needed. Say I chose to rebuild an engine (fit in new bearings and rings only) ahead of a long trip, what advice would you have for this? How fast does an engine brake? can I do this "on the go" roughly how many miles is sufficient for this?
