Hi did all 66 cars have the uprated 1300 engine or did some have a 1200
The VW 1200 a Standard Beetle 1965 1966 is simply equipped and was the cheapest Volkswagen Beetle for the European Market. Today the Standard Beetles are very rare compared to the deluxe Beetles. The 1200A Beetle was produced between 1965 and 1966. The 1200 A Beetle is also called European Standard Model. There are differences between a 1965 1200A and a 1966 1200A model. For example they have different wheels, hubcaps and front axle. But the special Standard Beetle only features are the same.

The 1300 was introduced for the US market so the Beetle could keep up with the speeds on the US roads. It had a HP jump of ~10HP from the 1200.

The only way to tell for sure if you have an original engine is to get a birth certificate. A birth certificate is a nickname the vintage VW community has given for a document obtained from Volkswagen that tells the owner when the car was produced, when it was shipped, where it was shipped and what factory installed options it has (M codes). If you provide the engine number, they will also tell you if it is the original engine. Information on getting a birth certificate is available on this forum (must be logged in).
An engine # beginning with a "D" would be a 1200 engine that was intended for a Standard Beetle (not Deluxe). If your car is a standard, it would have come with a fuel tap instead of a gas gauge, a foot operated headlight dimmer switch and a two position interior light switch with no setting to turn on when the door is opened. Does this describe your car?
Are you sure you wrote the engine # correctly. I'm not aware of a "D" engine with an "8" as a second digit.
