Bentley manual ...any good?

Post by Digger89L »

Does anyone have any experience with this Bentley manual: Volkswagen Service Manual: Hints on the repair and maintenance of the Volkswagen 1300-1966, Volkswagen 1500-1967, Volkswagen 1500-1968, Automatic Stick Shift ???

It has about 390 pages (apparently). Is this the one people mean when they talking about the Bentley manual for 66 beetles?

That's a good one, and it's basically all 1966, but the best is the Volkswagen 1200 Service Manual by Bentley. It's the one that weighs a few pounds with a dark blue cover like the factory manuals. Ignore the fact that it says 1200 on the cover because it covers the '66 as well.

Well, this actually IS a Bentley Publishing manual as well ....not the 500+ pages, but about 390 pages.

Like I said on my original post, the Bentley manual with this ISBN: 978-0-8376-0026-0 is subtitled: "Hints on the repair and maintenance .....". While the big, hard-cover Bentley manual is ISBN-13: 978-0-8376-1646-9 .....and considerably more expensive.

Was Just wondering if anyone had any experience with the "Hints ....." manual, and how much less comprehensive it might be than the the other one. Both claim to cover 66 thru 69 model years ....

I have them both and one is for repair and maintenance and one shows every last nut and bolt. I prefer the heavy one.

But I only use the Bentley 1200 manual when I have to rebuild something complicated, like a door or a sunroof. It's invaluable for that kind of stuff. (My friend used it to restore his convertible top.) It also shows how to rebuild components like the fuel pump and wiper assembly. But for general maintenance, I still use a dog-eared copy of the first generation John Muir manual.

I have basically the same manual that is pictured above. It has an identical cover but was published in 1968 by Verlag Delius + Klasing ("By the publishers of GUTE FAHRT the magazine for the VW Driver"). It only lists 1966 and 1967 as being covered. It is similar in content and size to a Bentley manual that I own (not the huge one that Blue Baron mentions). It has line drawings of a Beetle and a Karmann Ghia on the cover with the words:

Volkswagen
Official Service Manual
Beetle and Karmann Ghia
1966, 1967, 1968, 1969
