Seat styles

Post by Digger89L »

When I got my 66 bug 6 months ago, it had the wrong front seats: a newish style passenger seat on the passenger side, and an older style passenger seat on the driver side (really). I managed to find a correct set of 1966 lowback seats, and set the other ones aside. Looking at them today, I noticed the newish seat was a bit odd: its a low-back seat (apparently with the original basket weave cover) but it has a seatback release on the outside edge of the seatback ...like the newer high-back seats do, starting in 1968.

A bit of research indicates that although the 1966 and 67 models had the same low-back seats, at some point in the 67 model year, VW changed the seatback release mechanism to the side of the seatback, and kept that style in subsequent years, although they went to highback seats.

So ....I appear to have one of these mid-year 1967 seats. Are they somewhat common, or are they hard to find??

Actually '66 seats are unique, because they have a flatter and squarer seat back when compared to a '67. (And the upholstery is unique as well.)

The seat release on the side indicates a '67 model, and they're about as rare as any '67 seat.
