Wrong speedometer cable or wrong spindles?

When I bought my bug, the broken speedo cable was just dangling. I read that it was a simple fix so I ordered a cable. Now I'm confused. The cable end is square but the spindle hole is round. Also, the spindle hole seems too big. ( see picture below) Am I doing something wrong? Can someone explain how to install this cable?

I think, I could be wrong, but I think that there is some sort of cotter pin that hooks the speedo cable up to the drum itself. Is the end you are concerning yourself with the end that goes through the front left drum and hub?

I can look at mine when I get home. Three out of the five lug bolts have busted their heads off, so it is sitting patiently, waiting for me to do something with it.

Matter of fact, I can PM you a picture of mine when I get home. Eventually, I will have to take that drum off anyway to get the lug bolts backed out of there.

There are dust caps that should be installed in the brake drums to protect the wheel bearings. They are tapped in with a hammer. The dust cap on the left side is provided with a square hole that the speedometer cable protudes thru. My Bentley manual that covers 1966 says that it is held in place with a C-washer but my early '66 has a hole in the cable for inserting a cotter pin. In most cases though, the cable tends to stay in position without anything to hold it in place.

Yes, there is a square hole in the center hub cover. Even a twist tie will work to keep it in place.

A question on this topic,

I have been meaning to replace my cable but seen 2 different heads - one that is round and another that seems to be like a half moon shape.

From the response, seems I can use any so long as it goes through and holds???
