Battery Rating effects

Post by KKV270 »

hi.

I'm running good...glad to say.... though still on my mission to make it best.

Was thinking about the battery ampere-hour effect on firing from the coil. I believe a weak battery will give a lower voltage thus less spark!!!! right???

If so, is a 40amp-hr battery good for a beetles running? Been using that ever since. Looking at the technical page, I see 6V 77amp-hr (though I'm on a 12 volt system)

Would be glad to pour in more juice in there.

Advice.

Battery Amps

Post by planenut »

If you're wondering about your battery amps while starting, yes, a weak battery will affect starting. By the time your starter pulls all it can get, sometimes with a weak battery, the coil may not get all it should. While the engine is running, the battery is pretty well out of the picture. you could even disconnect the battery, and the gen/alt would carry the load. The coil doesn't use a lot of power compared to the starter. You're looking at volts. Wherever you get your power, you have to keep volts up to drive the amps.

Battery Rating effects

Post by KKV270 »

Hi Planenut.
Thanks for the feedback. If I understand you well, the battery ratings is more a matter of cranking power (starter) and not running power.
I have experienced a case where the battery was removed from a vehicle and it kept running. I once tried the same on my '66 but it died off immediately. So, is that a case of different wiring that depends on a battery full time?
Or could it be a sign that my alternator may not be powering as well as should??
I appreciate the info.
