Welding adjusters on a beam. Need input.

Post by Ryan »

I am installing EMPI ballpoint adjusters on a stock 67 beam. I have the beam on the table with the lower pipe cut and the new adjuster is temporary installed with the leafs through it and the trailing arms are bolted on. I did this to ensure placement of the adjuster. The top pipe is still stock, I'm doing this one pipe at a time. I know exactly where I want to weld but ......I don't know how to weld. I have access to a welder but am wandering what others have used. Type of welding, MIG, TIG, stick? What type and size of rod? What amperage? Did you chamfer the edges? How much chamfer? One or both sides, beam and the adjuster get chamfered? Where did you put the ground? I heard you can seize the bearings if the ground is in the wrong place. How many weld beads? should I stack them for strength? What works best? Send your input please.

If you don't know how to weld, I don't think this is where you need to learn. Have this welded by a pro and then learn on scrap parts. It's perfectly fine to want to learn, but this is a component that I would not risk. I talk by experience! It should not cost that much to have it welded compared to the safety factor that you will gain.
Buy a welder and practice practice practice.
