Getting ready for a long trip

Post by biotex »

I'm needing some advice or ideas on how to be more prepared for a 1500 mile highway trip.

I'm wanting mechanical advice only please. For instance:
guages. Should I install a mechanical set? Oil pressure of course, but what else?
Oil cooler?
electronic ignition?
Run synthetic oil?
How would I know if the engine is starting to run too hot?
I plan to grease the wheel bearing, or replace them before hand.

And, is there a spin on oil filter conversion kit? I just changed the oil, and what a pain...

Edit: Sorry for so many questions...
Do you recommend the extra capacity oil sump?

Sheesh, all that just for a little road trip?

I'd recommend an oil change (no synthetics - I use oil additive with ZDDP for the lifters), a valve adjustment, and to keep an eye on engine temp, I'd install a Gene Berg oil temperature dipstick.

Points are fine as long as they're relatively fresh.
