Coil heating up

i have just bought a 1972, 1600 engine beetle.

the coil heats up when moving and only moves again after the coil has cooled down. searching for solutions on the net, i found that i needed to install a coil with a resistor.

i bought them but unfortunately the resistor is external, where do i connect the resistor and will it solve the problem?

Frankly I've never encountered an overheating coil. Maybe someone else can help.
