The red lever if it's hooked up and your car is equipped with heater boxes operates how much heat is allowed to come into the passenger area of your car. Up is full open and down is full closed or anywhere in between. The white lever determines how much of that heat will blow out of the two vents under the back seat and how much will be diverted forward through the heater channels and out the lower vents near the driver and passenger foot area. Those vents have an adjustable slide piece (if they are still there) that determine how much heat you want at those locations. Closing them will force more air to continue on to your defrost vents.
Properly connected and working heater boxes work very well. My 66 stays very toasty and warm. Occasionally when it's raining I have to open my front wing windows a crack to let some fresh air in to keep the windshield from fogging up but I stay warm for sure. I hope this helps.

Glad someone asked that question...I had been meaning to ask why the PO of my '66 didn't get 2 matching colors - I was about to either buy new matching colored ones or paint them! LOL Thanks guys!!
