Transmission - Slow in gear and normal in reverse

Post by comtec17 »

Hello forum!
I am writing as I have 66 with a transmission issue I just cannot figure out. While driving the car, the transmission just stopped working. What I mean by this is that no matter what gear I put it in, it would no longer catch and move the car along. When I pulled over, it smelled like burning clutch. At a full stop, I can put the transmission in reverse and it works with no issue. When I put the car in 1st or 2nd, sometimes it will move (slowly) and others it will not.

When the car is cold, it will go into gear but after about 10 minutes the gears just seam to stop working. I have checked the fluid and fluid levels and both are normal.

Any thoughts or ideas before I have to drop the motor and tranny out?

I would have guessed clutch myself, but I don't know why it would work in reverse. There are others on here that have had much more experience with trannies than I have, so hopefully they willl chime in.

How does the shift gate feel? Is it sloppy? You may want to go under the back seat, remove the access plate and check the condition of the bushings in the shift coupler cage. If they're falling to pieces or gone completely, replace with new bushings. Urethane bushings are available from most VW parts houses.

Believe it or not, it ended up being the clutch.
