I want to install DROP SPINDLES

Post by DocRandy »

Any Kit suggestions for my 66 with Drum brakes? I see a lot of them for sale as little as $100. ALSO What Tire size will I have to get once the front is down 2.5". My currents wheels are the VW 15X5" that came with the 66 Bug, they are the Chrome ones.
My current tires are:
195/65/15 all around....Do you think the 155/60/15's will work OK? Continental makes a set also Kumho in this size....otherwise where can I order smaller tires?
Thanks
Randy

NOTE:
After the Drop spindle install my 195/65/15 are just hitting when I turn going about 35-40mph the lean on the car and they barely start to scrape so I'm thinking I could get away with 185/60/15's possibly. I need to lose about 1-1.5" of tire to be safe.

Get the ones from CB Performance. You'll need the later '68 inner bearing and race for them but they're bolt-on. You're going to get 2.5" of drop from them so if you have a stock height '66 the odds are great that you won't need to change from the stock tires. That pic you posted is TINY. Makes it really hard to tell what tire you're running but it looks bigger than stock 185R15 and looks like it might already be lowered?

If the car was already modified, you're going to have to put the spindles on and see how much interference you have as it's very difficult to judge based on what I can see in your attachment. 155/60 smart car tires are a popular choice, as are 175/55's if you can find them. If you aren't narrowing, you're going to be putting the tire right under the outer fender lip so you want to be sure you have enough clearance for handling potholes and the usual driving conditions in your area or you're going to put your tires right up into your fenders and that'd suck.

Running drops with '68 larger bearings. Tires are 165-80R (15) on stock rims and no interference although close to being on edge of fender.
