Stalling out when rolling up to a stop sign

Post by lilbugger »

So, I pulled the beetle out of storage and have been having a little issue when I roll up to a light or stop sign. She is stalling out at every one. When I start her up in the morning she idles fine after a few minutes of helping her out with a few pumps of the accelerator. Do you think I just need to adjust the idle a bit? Also, She was stored with about 1/4 tank of gas with some fuel stabilizer in the tank, I filled it up and added some heet at the same time, drove it a total of about 1.5 hours since then and the problem persists. Let me know if you have any thoughts, not a big deal though I'm sure I'll get it figured out or it will work itself out. Mainly just posting to avoid doing real work.

do you have an electric idle cutoff on it, and if so, has it failed?

Fixed it! I had a bad connection to the ignition coil. All better now.

If it's in the stock location, facing the engine, it's at about 10 O'clock on the shroud. Odds are it's a blue cylindrical thing with a plug wire coming out of it, but it may also be black or a couple of other colors (depending on whether it's OEM or aftermarket)

Also check the idle cutoff solenoid. Should be a shiny brass thing on the carburetor with wire sticking out of it. With the key on, it should make a clicking noise if you unplug the wire and plug it back in. If it doesn't, it's dead and needs replaced.
