Hi all,
Im running a 1641cc with a 32/36 progressive carburetor in my bug (009,electronic ignition, standard fly wheel blah blah), I know its the reasonable carb as its got the improved power for accelerating and stupidly good fuel economy at cruising speeds.
But as its my summer toy and not my main car im thinking of maybe sprucing up the engine abit.
Im just wandering if Twin 34 ICT/EPC Carburettors will have a much more noticeable performance and keeping better mpg or as im going that way spend a bit more and get the big boys?
Is it worth fitting the bigger twins on a stock 1641? or are they just to good for my setup?
Thanks for your time
What carburetors?

Good morning Roasty, You can pick up some better performance with the dual carbs as long as you have additional supporting cast. Is this a dual port engine or a single port? Do you have a stock exhaust? If you are going to flow more air and fuel into the engine, you need to be able to effectively exhaust it as well. The duals with a single port & stock exhaust may not be real responsive off idle and bog down a bit if they are too much. One common mistake is going too much carb on a stock engine, and although on the top end you might see some gain, usually the low end where most of us spend the most time, you may be disappointed.
I have never used that setup before, so I'm not trying to steer you one way or the other, just trying to provide some info to consider. My guess is that there are some on here that have what you are asking about and can tell you how it is working for them. If you do go with the duals, get you a synchronizer to get them adjusted correctly. Good luck and happy motoring!

Fair point there, its always something I overlook!
It is however a duel port and ive fitted a Mondo Phat-Boy with 4-1 header (all ceramic) not for anything else other than it makes me laugh, its like when you see a dog with a massive set of nuts on show
I hear that they can be an absolute nightmare and even the ones you buy from a "VW" outlet are still not designed for the vw engine and need re jetting and stuff.. what the hell is that all about then!!
never the less its gunna BUG me!! what to do?

IMO going from a well tuned progressive to dual 34 ICT's is pointless. You're giving up a lot of intake runner which means less bottom end grunt, and though you can deliver more fuel charge for top end with the 34's vs the progressive, it's not worth the trade-off.
Get some 40mm kadrons instead. (borsol/solex). with a stock cam and rockers, jet them 135 mains and 55 idles to start with, and tune from there. if you have a 110 cam, go for 145 mains instead, the cam overlap likes these better. You can run these comfortably on an 1835 or even a mildly hot 1915 so there's a lot of room to grow with the kads.
I run this setup for both of my 1641's. 135 mains in the stocker and 145's in the 110 cam engine.
