Is Hi-Torque Starter Keeping Compufire From Working?

I'm working on a 12v converted 1966 beetle but I'm having trouble with hard starting. I've got a new starter, new optima battery (kept on a battery tender), replaced the ignition switch, new comp-u-fire ignition, and new cables. When I turn the key to the start position, the starter immediately engages, but it acts like there is no juice to the coil. It just turns and turns with no fire. As soon as I let go of the key to the run position, it tries to start. Is the hi-torque starter stealing too much amperage for the comp-u-fire to work?

It's not that the starter is stealing too much amperage. The problem is that there's simply not enough amperage to the coil. A hard-start relay would help.
