6 volt replacement radio

Post by CharlieC66 »

The Sapphire 3 in my car is broken and I would like to replace it with a modern radio. I'm getting the impression that they are all 12 V and I don't want to convert the whole car to 12 V. Thoughts are to install a 12 V battery just for the radio and charge it manually as necessary. Or does someone actually make a 6 V replacement radio. Any thoughts?

get a 12V converter for just the radio and:
The Retro Sound radios are modern and will fit right in.
I also am interested in your broken one.

6 volt radio

Post by Roadbug »

My 66 has block out plate, and my singing is good enough to go with the music of my VW engine.
I did buy a radio that just sits on the shelf in NC. While not pretty, it's complete. What are old 6 volt VW raido's worth today?

I see them from time to time on ebay. I as well have the block out plate
don't care if the radio works or not just want it to be clean looking and
have all the buttons :D I think anymore these days it is harder too find the
block out plate . still not sure if I want to remove it or not.

I have an offer from a friend who is into radio repair to take a look at it and see if it's an easy fix. in any case it looks good and worked fine until doused with ww fluid. Too expensive to convert a lot of stuff just for the radio. I cant sing but can live without it. :o

I just looked on e-bay and someone is listing a Sapphire IV 6 volt AM-FM at a really high buy it now price. The only advantage over a modern radio is it's 6 volt and for the purist correct for the time. :)

Listings don't mean anything. It's the cloasing bid that matters. (And that's the one person in the world who will pay the most for it.)
