New Lock/keyed Door Handles instal

Post by RikiTiki »

So I got these new keyed door handles for my 66

http://www.jbugs.com/product/113898205D.html

any one have any luck with these?
whats the trick to install and have them work properly?
do I have to change out the locking mech?

they seem to fit ok and match basically what was orginally there outside the key/lock component.

I just finished installing those.

Slide the rubber seal out of the way, and behind are two phillips screws. Remove them and slide the handle out. Look at the new one and see how the handle end opposite the screws slides. A tip on pre install. Screw the srews into the new handle before you install it. This will chase the threads and make it a lot easier to get the screws started once they are installed.

The fine threads can easily cross thread. I ordered the new plastic trim also that seals the handles against the door skin.

hmm thanks didnt sound like you had any issue
yeah Ill have to take and post some pics
the thing is I can get it in but it doesnt work.
to install I had to put the key in and turn then screwed it into place.
but then couldnt get the key back out.

If I try installing it without the key the handle dosnt go back far enough
(flush to the door)
its like the tab on the end of the door mech is too large/thick.

Riki-

Don't forget to call J-Bugs, if needed. Those guys all know a heck of a lot about bugs.

The one thing I don't like about the door handle set- and it's minor- is that the keys aren't VeeDub keys. I need to get my handles matching, but I hope to use a locksmith and get original keys (I've seen a discussion about it on here somewhere).
