Upper seat belt mount

Post by CharlieC66 »

putting shoulder belts where there were lap belts. I brought the plastic plug down to Home Depot. looked to be 12 mm but they didn't have any bolts short enough. Hardware store trip and i may bring one of the floor bolts assuming same size. Anyone with a quick answer to this.

Hardware store, I found out that the bolts were not metric after all. No wonder the socket was slightly loose.

Yes your right the seat belt bolts are 7/16 SAE Fine thread. Not metric. This change from metric to SAE was a mandate by (USA) DOT.

BTW, a high grade bolt should be used like grade 8 or better. This however probably does make it stronger than the threads and the surrounding metal in the B pillar. Also the seatbelt bracket itself should be allowed to pivot at the bolt so using a sleeve to keep the bolt from tightening down on the bracket is highly recommended. Also you can go to just about any wrecking yard and get seatbelt bolts that are correct. 7/16 seatbelt bolts were used on many older car models. Just a thought.....
