Will it fit?

Will the motor and trans fit a 66?

Hi experts ..... can you tell me if a motor/trans from a 73 super beetle fit the 66 sedan?

I see references for the 66 as either 6 or 12 volts is that the case? I have not picked up the 66 yet and not sure what I will have.

Thanks for your comments

Yes it will fit, but you'll need to convert the '66 to 12v in order to use it. US model '66's were 6 volt. In fact, I think global production of '66 models was 6 volt for the Type 1. This may have been done already. Check the voltage regulator or bulbs and see if they're 6 or 12v. the stock 6v wiring harness can handle a 12v load with no trouble so you don't have to replace that unless it's just junk to start with.

If you have a stock '66 transmission you will also need to either:

Replace the flywheel on your engine with a 6v flywheel (which is 180 mm instead of 200 like the later 12v flywheels). If you change the flywheel you MUST MUST MUST reset the end play or you will destroy your engine in no time.

OR

Grind your transmission bellhousing out to fit a 12v 200mm flywheel. This isn't a complicated task at all and can be done in an hour or so with a hand file or a few minutes with a grinder or dremel tool before you install the engine.

I'm trying to recall if '73's had fuel injection or not, is it injected or does it have a carb? If it's injected you'll need all the bits and bobs for the FI system as well, and you'll have to rig those up because they were not present in '66 models. If it's carbs, then you are in good shape. Once you deal with the 12v conversion and flywheel, it will pop right in.
