Insurance?????

Post by Russell 66 »

I need insight into insurance choices for our new '66. We thought to insure the car as an antique/historic type but found we'd be severely limited in the amount of time we can drive the car if we do it that way. The bug will be the third vehicle in a two driver household, but I'll be using it to do about half of my driving. So fine . . . normal insurance . . . . normal plates . . . . no big deal. THEN we find out we can't insure the car “normally” for more than the depreciated value off the original cost of about $1,500. So we pay a heap to insure everyone else on the road should we hit them, but if we are hit or the car is stolen, tough tacos. All we'd ever get to repair or replace is a couple of hundred. Is that what you daily drivers all have? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, check the laws in your state and make sure you can daily drive with collector insurnace (some states that's a no-no), then look up some place like heagarty (sp?) that specializes in collector cars. I think you'll want an agreed value policy with no mileage restrictions.

Now, the disclaimer. I'm not an insurance agent, and even though my mommy is, that does not make me an authority. Do your homework and make sure you can get what you need for a decent price.

... but we started with our existing American Family agent we had our other cars and homeowners insurance on? And they shot us $60.00 for the year- no questions asked about how or how often we were going to use it. Just rolled it right onto our existing policy and we were rolling.

We started with Heagarty because the previous owners have it insured with them for the total value for about $130 a year. Heagarty said they would not insure a daily driver. Period. So my husband called the lizard company who insures his car and motorcycle. Unless we drive it next-to-never can't be historic and has to be valued off depreciated purchase price in '66. We get the car Saturday and will get our tags Monday so my husband accepted it at a whopping $600 a year.

This car is a gift to me so my hubby has taken care of everything but I think I'll keep looking. My car is insured with USAA so I guess I'll give them a try and see what they say.

I'll let you all know if I find anything better. Anyone else who has a company they are happy with, head me in that direction, PLEASE. :bounce:

Turns out State Farm and USAA are both more than happy to insure the car for its current value and for no more $ but much more coverage including roadside assistance. No limitations on mileage, purpose or anything. Geico is the pits! Thanks for the input.
