Vin # vs. Color Chart info needed, please?

We have a 66 Bug, it has had ALOT of customizations (or half-a** work) done to it and we would like to repair/restore. Problem is...We don't even know if it is the basic 2 dr model, or if it was the deluxe model, and we don't know how to tell. I had no idea there was so much to owning a cute little car! We cannot seem to find an accurate account of what the original paint color/interior colors may have been. Vin # is: 116 079 931

If anyone can help us with this, we would greatly appreciate it.

I think the only way you can figure out your original paint color for certain is to get the VW birth certificate, unless you can find the original paint somewhere where it wasn't re-sprayed (like maybe under the hood where all the wiring is or some place like that). There is a link on the site for the VW Birth Certificate - it also tells you what model and what, if any extras came with the car.

You should be able to find a patch of original paint on it somewhere. Look inside and out as all the metal body parts were painted in the same color when new. You may have to scratch the paint, lift the carpets or take off a door panel etc.
All '66 Beetles originally sold new in the US were Deluxe models with the 1300 engine. Your birth certificate will tell you if was ordered and sold in another country with other specs.
That is quite an early VIN number, probably built in the first month of production, August 1965.

Thank you so much! The car is presently in the shop...where it's been since the day we bought it

When we can get to it, or we get it home, we will certainly look for those signs. We do know the front & back seats are all red leatherette around the bottoms, but we have not looked under the seat covers yet, and don't know if those seats are original to the car! We appreciate the information as well as the hints!

Common telltale places to check are inside the hood, down the inner front fender wells, above the windshield sill where the headliner's been hiding it, and under the rubber seals for the glass.

of course, those places aren't exactly easy to get to in a completed car either...

Birth Certificate will tell you though. Once you know the color you can find the pain mixing codes and be in business.
