Anybody know what this thing is? It's a bracket bolted over the rear drain plug on my transaxle ('66 sedan, by the way). It has a little screw in the center. Photos attached (if I'm doing this right).

- The bracket is on the transmission, just forward of the oil drain plate in this photo.

While I have no idea what it is, I found this exploded view of the transaxle. It does not show it at all.

I checked mine and I do not have one, nor do I see how anything similar would attach. Are you sure this is a '66 transaxle? I didn't search for later year models.

Yep, I've been looking at as many views of the transaxle as I can find, and haven't seen anything like it. I think it may be an accessory of some kind, except that I can't imagine what it does, since it doesn't seem to be attached to anything but the transaxle.
And, yes, I'm fairly sure this car still has its original '66 transaxle. I've had a variety of Beetles (62, 65, 73 Super, and 75, besides this '66) and I've never seen anything like it.
Thanks for the reply.

Only other thing I can think of is some kind of skid plate if this bug had ever been super lowered. To protect against speed bumps kind of thing. That's the only thing my imagination could come up with.
