Seat for the '66

Post by pira114 »

I'm about to attempt to get original style seats for my bug. Currently, I have two different style seats up front and I don't think either belong. Nor do I know in which year they do belong.

Anyway, exactly what style(s) belong in a '66 and does anyone know of a good source for them. I have access to an upholstery guy who can fix them. Just need to find them. All the pick and pulls around here laughed when I said "66 bug."

check the samba

'66 will be a low back seat. they did vary a bit over the years but I believe anything up to '67 will fit. Ideally '65 - '67 if you can't find specific'66 seats

Pre '65 seat had the rounded seat back and no alternative way to lock the seat back in place

Important !!
'66 seats were one year only.
Low back with square shoulders to the seat back. Seat back release lever at foot level with an ivory or grey knob to lock seat back in place. OMG
really hard to find. I have a pair.

'67 is one year only too:
Still low back, the low down lever disappears and a rubber knob on the seat back high up appears, facing the door it releases the seat back. These are rare to find too.

'68 up the seat lever has a plastic knob to tip the seats forward Is this the year VW intoduced high back seats?

I have photos of my '66 only seats during resto and now, just having a problem uploading tonight. email me if you don't see them here soon.

Thanks! Fortunately, I have one seat that is original '66. The other one has to go. Now to start the quest for one '66 seat. Wish me luck. If anyone has a good line on where to find one, please pass it on.

I will try samba. Thanks again.

OK.

Been searching the net for someone, anyone, who sells the seats. I can't find any company that sells any year seats for bugs. Are seats that hard to find?

All I could find were new custom type seats and racing seats and crap like that. No one makes a reproduction vintage looking seat anymore?

I checked the samba. Didn't see any seats for sale by themselves. And the 66's for sale didn't want to part out. I'll keep looking though, it does seem like my best bet if I'm patient. And I have plenty other things to fix in the mean time.

thanks for the reply.

If '64 had the rounded top and '66 had the release lever on the bottom and '67 had the side release then each year was one year only. I have the '65 seats in my '66. I just started working on them. Check it out at:
