The transmission pops out of 3rd gear while running. I purchased a "retaining ring, shift rod bushing" on the advice of a friend. Does this sound right and what's the best way to access the area that needs the fix?
I currently have the body off of the frame. Thanks much all!

Hi,
If your transmission is jumping out of gear the problems are internal - synchro rings or bearings. No amount of external work will really fix it. You need to pull the transmissin and get it to someone who knows gearboxes, you state the body is off the floorpan. Pulling the transaxle is easy. Fixing the box isn't a hard job, but you do need someone with the set-up jig and the knowledge.
easy help is available with $$ depending on were you are in the US

Popping out of third gear means your transmission is shot. Sorry for the bad news.
Best to buy a rebuilt transaxle from a reputable builder. A mechanic needs to be a VW transmission specialist and be in practice to do good transaxle rebuilds. Check the ads in Hot VWs magazine for rebuilt transmissions.
