Post by Lucy66 »

Hi everyone, i need some opinions please.. Can't decide what color to paint my bug(Lucy). She was originally seablue, but i really like the diamond gray on the earlier bugs. What do you think? :?:

Hi Lucy66! I always like to stay with the original color but that's all personal preference. My first 66 came from California back in 1975 and the previous owner had painted it the "Sun Bug" gold color, which I loved. The second 66 I had was painted so may times I wasn't sure what color it was until I got the beetle birth certificate. As it turned out it had been bahama blue, but I had guessed that the color had been Sea Sand (now that is an unusual color, and you don't see many like that). So I always figured if and when I had to repaint I was going to go back to bahama blue. This 66 came with the factory paint on it so I knew for sure what I was dealing with so when I repainted I stuck with the factory color.

Sea blue

Post by Boris1966 »

Hi there!

I have a Java Green 66' bug. When I was looking for one I really liked the colour Sea Blue. I think that you should stick to the original colour. It's a wonderful shade of blue and it will restore the car to some originality?

I agree with Boris. (Though my wife's favorite is Java Green.)

Here's our Sea Blue '66. If this shot doesn't sell you on the color, nothing will!

If you want to go with a stock 1966 color, keep it stock.

If you want to stick to a VW color, there are many that are beautiful.

Some of my favorites.

L388 Atlas blue ('58 convertible color, 1 year only for beetle)

L620 Savannah Beige ('67 only color for beetle)

L 412 Diamond Green (oval color)

L324 Polar Silver (oval color)

Unless I was going for a 100 point restoration, I would definitely recommend the original color to the car...if not, at least within the same model year. I too, am fond of the original color to the car.

As a side note…my ’57 was originally Coral red and I purchased it with gorgeous Black paint. (which was also an option that year) So, deep down inside, I kinda wish it was the original.

But I also agree with fatalifeaten on the Polar silver and Diamond Green, both are top colors in my book.

I’ll even going to go against this "moot" thought/question yet again. My all time favorite color is from the 1967 Chevrolet’s…”Butternut” yellow. Having been undecided on a color since my project started, “today” this is my color of choice for my yet to be painted ’66. I’m sure it will change again before it’s all said and done.

I would recommend staying away from the trendy colors. (Remember the trendy magenta pink and teal that was popular back in the early 90s?) As for “Pearls or Candies”, I’d let those for the customs’. They are not cheap or easy to match or touch-up. IF you decide on a color change…I would recommend painting the whole car, inside and out. Make it appear is if came from the factory that way. From the LFW…“Lawndale NC,Factory Werks”.

Though I or anyone else that I’ve found in the VW hobby, would diss someone’s car for the color it’s painted…don’t worry about it…It’s YOUR car! Have fun with it!
Just my 2...ehh, buck 2 nintyfive cents worth :D

The "LFW", I like that!! This will be a inside out paint job, unfortunately someone has all ready painted the inside yellow, but thats got to go ( wife's not a fan of yellow). I just want a color that gives it personality without alot bling and stay with a VW color. Im' really kind of hung up on the Diamond Gray. thanks for all the input, keep it coming!! :)
