running light problems

Post by ampline »

i am having a problem getting my running lights working... i have head lights (stuck on high beams for some reason?) and no running lights??? (actually i have one "very very" dim running light passenger side,, about as bright as a lit cigarette) I have checked all the grounds i can find (i am new to the vw's,, but not to wiring issues, cleaned inner fender grounds,, battery grounds,, any others i should check?)
By cleaning up the grounds, i gained use of both headlights.... but i still have no running lights,,, can anyone steer me in the right direction... I also have no turn signals,,, but i will save that post for later (or are these issues related?)... Anyway, thank you for your time,,, any advice would be greatly appreciated.. or a link.. thanks

You may want to print out the wiring diagram on the main site just for reference. Wiring on these old VWs is a pain at times. There are many connections under the front hood that can become loose or corroded. Start there and then make sure you go through all your fuses (under the dash). The fact that you have one weak running light makes me think that you may have just a bulb issue on the other side.

The signal light issue is probably related to the blue box being shot but you need to check all your connections etc, before jumping to that conclusion. This is the little blue box that has nine wires (I think, I'm going from memory here) going into it. It controls the turn signals, emergency flasher etc.. If it's shot, you won't have any turn signals or emergency flasher. There was a more modern replacement unit that used to be sold, not sure that it is any longer. The blue boxes you can find on ebay every once and a while or on www.thesamba.com classified section.
