Our 1966 1300 Beetle Engine randomly Cuts Out when driving. Just like someone has turned the Ignition off. Sometimes accompanied by a Backfire.
It was already converted to 12 Volt Electrics when we bought it in 1986. I have tried New Condensers. Original German Bosch Condenser from an old Distributor. New Ignition Switch. Swapping new ish BERU Coil off our 1972 Type 3. Nothing has made any difference. I think it`s fixed as it stops doing it sometimes. Then it randomly Cuts out again. Thought I had fixed it yesterday when I fitted the Original German Bosch Condenser but it stopped going down a hill and refused to Re Start. Waited a few minutes, tried again. It Started and drove home without Cutting Out.
Any ideas please ?
Steve
Engine Cutting Out
Re: Engine Cutting Out
Are you sure that it is not a fuel problem? If a small shot of starting fluid does not get any results then it indicates an electrical problem. A volt/ohm or current tester is helpful. When it cuts out do you have power to the coil? Is there current to the electo-magnetic pilot jet? Pop the distributor cap and check for a spark at the points when you turn the engine with a wrench (ignition switch on).
