Engine Removal

Post by D2 »

I'd like to be able to take the engine out of my car. I don't have a lift or access to one. I have a concrete floor in my garage and a 3 ton floor jack.
Will jack stands with a maximum height of 24" - if placed under the rear torsion tubes - raise the car high enough to clear the rear apron with the engine on an EMPI engine dolly?

This is the way I remove an engine:
I place the car on jack stands - far less than the maximum height - enough to be able to get underneath to disconnect what is necessary. I use a jack to lower the engine. While the engine is under the car, I get the engine off of the jack and onto a piece of plywood that is as wide as the engine but about 4 feet long. Then I raise the car up high on the jack stands. I then grab the plywood by the long part and drag the engine out from underneath the car.

I'm sure others have ways that work just as well or even better. This way works well for me. If needed, I can give details on how I get the engine off of the jack.

I uesd to do it with just a jack and take the motor out and drop on the ground on a piece of wood or old carpet. Then jack the car up and drag it out. If you don't have enough jack height remove a wheel and pull out under the fender well. After that, I got the tools I needed.
