Tie Rods

Post by elpasorabo »

I ordered my new tie rods from Airhead, but they are clearly not the right ones as the old one on the longer rod is longer and the old rod "ends" have thicker shaft. What's up? Do you think I have a newer front end under this 66?

You adjust the length to match the the old one you took off, and as long as it mounts the same way, it doesn't matter if there are detail differences.

Hmmm not so much.. See the actual tie rod ends themselves are a different diameter pin. The new one I bought is smaller than the old ones. So they swim inside the steering arm and arms on the wheels. Can't ever be tightened enough. Plus the rod on the old one is longer by 1/2" than the new long rod. So when trying ton align the wheels I reach the end and am still 2 degrees out on alignment.

Sorry. Exchange for the proper one. Your '66 should have the balljoint front suspension.

You are correct. Just as a note to the other 66 owners... I believe the ones shown on Airhead are incorrect. They show to be for a 66 but part number is not for a 66. I ordered the correct part number from jbugs.
