Hi.
I've been working with a side ignition switch. The original key barrel works but doesn't have the switch.
I got a beetle switch (minus key) from a scrap place...thinking I will benefit from the switch...only to find that the switch is larger than that of my car.
Question, is it possible to swop the key barrels?
Any assistance on videos that can help me see how to swop my ignition key barrel??
Alternatively, assist with instructions on how to cut a key for the keyless switch.
Thanks.

Ignition Key Barrel Replacement.
Hi.
I managed to figure out how to remove the ignition barrel from the holder (the one that holds the steering wheel). Question, can that solid item be disassembled... I'd like to get a new key cut.
Fortunate though, I can now swop the Steering holders and use my original key!!! I believe.... haven't yet done it but will post the results.

Here is the ignition key and holder I got. I want to replace this key barrel with my original key as this holder has its switch but mine doesn't.
Other intention is, I'd want to get this switch a new key cut. how do I disassemble it?

Cant believe the number of "self replies" I've already made...
Well, my new huddle....any tips on how to remove the whole ignition key assembly from the car? I see two "round-headed" bolts. How do they get unscrewed??

I'm not an expert on this but I think I have the answer for you - and it may not be what you want to hear. I believe that the ignition assembly/steering column clamp was attached with what are called shear bolts. When the bolt is torqued down, the hex head of the bolt is designed to shear off. This is so that someone cannot simply remove the ignition assembly/steering column clamp in an attempt to steal your car. I believe that the "round-headed" part of the bolts need to be drilled out. Hopefully the assembly can then be removed and there will be enough of the bolt showing that it can be removed with vice grips. I have never done this procedure, but I think I remember reading something about it. As most old Beetles did not come with a locking steering ignition switch, I'm thinking that replacement shear bolts might be difficult if not impossible to find.

- Here is a picture of a shear bolt - not necessarily a VW one.
