Just got a 66, Now I get to overhaul the engine

Post by billfred »

Oh well, I was looking for a new project. I just got this 66. It was running rough. I cleaned the carb, checked/ adjusted valves and points, new plugs. No better. I haven't done a compression check, but I'm pretty sure I've got a project

Idles OK, but falls flat going up any kind of incline. No power at all, just driving around my neighborhood. I'm getting oil coming out of the carb, and smoke from the crank case filler. I'm guessing some bad rings and valves.

I'm kind of new to Bugs (my dad and I had a 63 when I was a kid). I've been reading my John Muir book. I'm pretty mechanically inclined.

In addition to my Muir book, any other good reading recommendations for engine overhaul?

Thanks,
Bill :D :D

Oil out of the carb? That's new to me.

A compression test will reveal all you need to know. The Muir book should be a big help in analyzing the problem. But slugishness can be caused by a number of things, such as the timing being off or a non-functioning vacuum advance on the distributor.

I'm not saying it's not a tired engine. Sounds like it. I'm just sayin'.

The "Wilson" book is the bible for VW air-cooled rebuilding. It will tell you everything you need to know.

The Bentley manual is also very helpful.
