The tube coming up is called the "heat riser". The part you're missing is the part of the heat riser "tin". If you're missing these, you're likely missing other pieces. It's an important part of the "air" cooling system on these engines. Some people mistakenly remove these cooling tin pieces. Thinking that they are improving cooling by letting more air in. The German engineers created a low pressure of air that pulled in cooler air from outside and pushed it over the cylinders for cooling. Everyplace a piece of tin in removed, creates an opening for hot air to be sucked up into the cooling air. The overall effect with missing tin is hotter running temperatures, lower performance, and reduced longevity.
Here are the pieces in your picture....

There's also insulation that goes with it.....

Here's a picture of tin used.. #32 is what you need (left and right)
#29 is another common missing piece

THe engine compartment is suppose to be air tight so the outside air can be sucked in through the vents below the rear window. These seals keep hot air from the exhaust flange (bolted to the head) from entering the engine compartment. If hot air comes into the compartment, it is mixed with the cool air and heats up thus negating the effect of an air cooled enging having cool air blown across the engine through the shroud. So, the engine compartment is suppose to be sealed from all outside air except that which comes through the vents. Hope that makes sense.
I'll take your word for it. I have no idea about how the system works or what all of the tin parts play. Thanks for the input.darzoom wrote:THe engine compartment is suppose to be air tight so the outside air can be sucked in through the vents below the rear window. Hi.
Glad to be reading through posts that have been since the last I was around....and especially glad to see this one about this tins.
I unfortunately dont know how to attach pics, but I have some sad images of my rammed-from-the-back bug...and will soon need to get the same items.
Hercdrive, Darzoom, thatnks for the info about the importance of the tins as I had mine messed up and will definately follow-up to replace everythig as was (stock) with the knoweldge that it all with a engeneered design.
Someone please teach me how to attach pics!!
