New turn signal switch makes the horn blow?

Post by bradreedthompson »

My sweet li'l '66 is making me pull my hair out again. I just installed a new turn signal switch and now, when I use the turn signal, the horn sounds! Any ideas? I've removed the steering wheel and even disconnected the brown wire from the horn ring and it still does it. Obviously something is grounding out somewhere when I use the signal, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be.

Wiring is always a conundrum, and that's one of those tough-to-diagnose-over-the-Internet issues.

So true. What's weird is that it was working perfectly with the old switch, and nothing changed but the switch. If I move the switch a tiny bit, I can get the signals to work without the horn sounding, but if I click the switch all the way over, the horn blows. This makes me think it's not a wiring thing as much as it is some part of the switch grounding out on the steering column when it's moved. Is there a spacer or grommet or something that I'm missing that goes between the switch and the column?

A real conundrum for sure. And always fun to troubleshoot. You are on the right path looking for parts grounding.

When you are not pressing the horn button, the path of the negative is disrupted. When you are not using the turn signal, the positive path of electricity is disrupted. When you unhook the brown horn wire you are disconnecting the negative. If you unhook the 6 (or 12) volt to the horn, do the turn signals work properly?
