End Play

Post by planenut »

I have this 1600 I'm installing in a 66 sedan. It was built up to go in a dune buggy, but I purchased it, dissembled and cleaned it. I found the main bearings to be old, so I replaced all the bearings in the engine, even though some had already been replaced. The dealer measured my bearings to be sure I got the correct width mains. I assembled the bottom end, but now, I don't have ANY end play. With the flywheel installed, it's actually dragging. Without the flywheel, there's plenty of end play, and very free. There's no way I could add the three thinnest shims. Is there a possibility the flywheel is wrong? Has anyone seen this before?? (Oh, and If I install the small shim from my gasket set that fits over the dowel pins between the crank and flywheel, I actually get .008 endplay.)

end play

OK, for everyone's information, and so it doesn't happen to anyone else, I'll spill the beans on the end play problem. When I was cleaning the case, I'd removed the oil galley plugs so I could clean them. After drilling, tapping and installing allen plugs, the one on the front of the case, behind the flywheel, wasn't tapped and screwed in far enough. This allowed the flywheel to touch it. Mistake on my part, just remember this in the future.
