Distributor cap question

Post by Bug-Eyed »

I got my '66 Beetle 5 days ago and as most of us do, I spent some time looking it over and check things out. Something I found that puzzles me a little with my limited VW Bug experience. I removed the distributor cap to see if it might have electronic ignition and found there is no locator notch on the distributor cap to lock it into place on the distributor. The only thing holding in place are the retainer clips. This can't be right is it?

I will eventually put an electronic ignition in it but for now will leave it stock with the point setup.

Locator Notch

Post by darzoom »

There should be a tab on the cap that fits into the notch on the distributor. It is normally located right under the attachement point for one of the spring clips. Is it a Bosach or an aftermarket? I have never seen a Bosch without the tab. Aftermarket caps are a different story as I do not use them.

Here's a picture of the distributor and cap. The cap appears to be the wrong one but the engine runs ok.

The carburetor B 6335 is the only number I can find.

The distributor with part number 0231 137 009 is on the engine now. I was told by the person that sold me the '66 that it had a 1600.

That's the right distributor with the wrong cap. I suppose an advantage is you could adjust the timing without loosening the clamp!

Also, I like your nice fresh German gas hose.

I've ordered and received a new correct cap from WCM. Fit and works great.
