correct keys?

Post by ppge01 »

hi there, i am an owner of a 1966 beetle .i want some info cause after searching the internet for a couple of hours i got more confused :)
basically, to take things from start..1966 beetles use same key for the doors the ignition and the engine lid..right?
i want to bring my car to factory specs..now i have one key for the doors one for the ignition and one for the engine lid :) i know that the ignition switch is not the original one ( its an aftermarket one ) and the lid lock is from a later model ( the key has an AK7 code on it )
the key that operates the door is a VW one with SE code on it ( also stamped on it is the word Borkey ).
so, i would like to know these :
1. which is the correct key code for 1966 beetles
2. as i want to replace the aftermarket ignition switch i want to know if possible the diameter of the original ignition switch.i am afraid that the previous owner had widened the hole in the dash in his effort to install the aftermarket one
3. the exterior doors handles on my beetle are the ones with the circular push buttons..is this 1966-correct??
thank you very much for any help and info

There were numerous key codes, so I'd probably go with what's on your doors. (Especially if left and right match.) The round buttons were introduced mid year, which means early and late '66s are different.

The engine lid lock was a dealer installed option, though original ones could be retumbled by the dealer to match the profile of the ignition/door key. On my '66 No. 1, one key fits all, however on '66 No. 2, it's a separate key.

the thing is i doubt if the key i have for the doors ( code SE ) is the original.i guess the previous owner had a key remade..anyway..it's also strange that the exterior door handle in the passenger side has no key slot. it's completely blank.i t only has the circular push button.. u can lock- unlock the passenger door only from inside the car. i guess this is not correct either righh?

I'm thinking that you do have the correct passenger side door handle. On the `66 Beetles intended for the US market, both doors could be locked and unlocked from the inside or the outside. Passenger side door handles on the `66 Beetles for the European market did not have a key slot and could only be unlocked from inside the car. US market Beetles had one key that fit both the ignition and the doors. It was common for European market Beetles to have a steering ignition lock and those Beetles had separate keys for the door locks and steering ignition locks. On European models without a steering ignition lock, only one key is required.

The door key for my car is stamped SU 4 but my car is an early European model with the rectangular push button door handles.

One other difference; US market Beetles were equipped with emergency 4 way flashers. The European models were not.

Bingo on the lack of a passenger side lock, h~moto. After readijng his post I noticed he was from Greece, and was going to write the same thing.

European models can be confusing, because there were so many of them, and each had different features.
