Hi.

What is a good way to tell that I may need to top-up my transmission oil?

Open the plug on the side and top it off until it runs out the hole.

Actually if you've never replaced the gear oil you should drain it and replace it properly. There are two drain plugs on the bottom, and you'll need a 19mm allen wrench to remove all three. (A 19mm bolt with double nuts will work in a pinch.)

Use 90 wt. gear oil.

Be sure your vehicle is level when adding/checking the oil.

The transaxle oil capacity is 6.3 U.S. pints (5.3 Imp. pints; 3.0 liters) but the refill capacity is 5.3 U.S. pints (4.4 Imp. pints; 2.5 liters). This is because not all the oil can be removed when draining the transaxle. You are best to fill it until it runs out of the hole as Blue Baron suggests. A word of warning: If you fill it too quickly, oil may drain out before the proper amount is added. After the oil begins to drain out of the fill hole, wait a few minutes to give the oil a chance to flow to all parts of the transaxle. Then try adding more oil.
