Parts hunting success!!!

Post by Digger89L »

Well, I'm presently surprised at how fortunate I was this past week to literally stumble into a gold mine of vintage parts. I had been looking for all the glass for my 66 project, and had found a guy who had just the side glass. I was prepared to make an 8 hour round trip and spend considerable $$ for the find. However, before taking the trip, the "wanted" ad I had put online in the local area paid off. A guy only 2 hours away called to say he had the glass I needed, plus some other stuff. So, I made the trip and came away with a van full of treasures: rear window, rear quarter windows, vent windows, door glass for both doors, a spare driver-side complete door, a hood emblem, wiper arms, rear seat back, BOTH front seats, and from a 66 bug!!!, two complete floor pans, and two OEM period-correct steel wheels. And, all for a VERY reasonable price in my estimation. (less than I would have paid for 2 mid-grade floor pans, including shipping!!!) The guy I got the stuff from likes the "older" (1950s) beetles, so was willing to part with the 60's stuff. Now, I'm well on the way to being able to get my restoration project underway.

Good news!

VWs were popular in Canada, and it's fertile ground for parts hunting.

Yes they are (and were) ....I owned five myself over the years, and there's two still on the road in my local area ...both Super Beetles.

Couple of questions: been googling around the various source sites for parts, etc., and I haven't been able to find a supplier who sells "correct" seat covers for the 66 bug: what I'm looking for is the black basket weave vinyl, but with the smooth panel on the outer edges of the seat bottoms and backs. Anyone know of a supplier offering these? Also, the seat latch handle is broken on the passenger seat that I just acquired ...anyone know of an aftermarket replacement being available ...or perhaps a good used one?

Thanks!

Other than expensive custom upholstery from West Coast Classics, nobody makes a '66-specific seat cover.

The latch handle is a swap meet item.

Wolfburgwest sell the correct seat covers for '66 with the smooth outer panels, the rea seat isn't exactly correct but the fronts are. I did mine and can share photos.
