Need help with glass compatibility

Post by Digger89L »

New guy here, need some help / direction. Searched the forum topics but couldn't find the info needed. I have a 66 standard bug that needs ALL the glass, except for the headlight covers. Everything got vandalized before I bought the car last week. So ....which years of Beetle glass will fit in my 66? From what I've been able to glean from the forum, and from vendor catalogues, etc., it seems that glass from 1965 thru 1977 for standard bugs is the same ...but I can't get any real confirmation on that, especially for the rear windshield glass. Anybody got the definitive answer on this?? BTW ...this will be first of MANY questions as I get this restoration underway, so I appreciate your patience! :)

Windshield: 1965-up (regular Beetle)
Door windows: 1965-up
Vent wing glass (not including the metal wings and latches) 1965 up. (The entire ventwing runs from '65 to '67.)
Rear quarter windows: 1965-up (Find some popouts.)
Rear window - 1965 to 1971.

Thank you VERY much. That's very helpful. I have a line on a 73 regular bug with good glass all around .....but you're saying the rear window from a 73 won't fit in the 65 to 71 models? Did they go bigger again from 72 on??

How are you on seat compatibility? Is the rear seat (bottom and back) from that 73 bug compatible with my 66 ??

Rear window enlarged in '72; seat runners also changed in '72. '73 front seats are not compatible. As for the rear, I've never tried fitting one, but it should work.

Okay ....related glass question. Wikipedia article says when the Super Beetle was introduced in 1971 (as the 1302 model) it used the same glass as the "regular" Beetle for the 71 and 72 model years, and then went with the larger rear window in 72 (as did the regular Beetle) and switched to the curved windshield in the 1973 model year ( 1303 model).

So, if I am interpreting this correctly, this means that I could also be looking at 1971 Super Beetles for front and rear windows for my 66, and at 72 Super Beetles for the front window. I'm taking it that these specs apply for North American (U.S.A and Canada) beetles. Any comments???
