Post by SlamWagen66 »

Hi, got a few questions...

My January '66 has the wrong keys, It's got this type:

Shouldn't it have this type or similar with VW sideways etc:

How would I be able to change back?
Is it a case of replacing all the bocks and barrels?

These are the door handles:

Are they correct??

Thanks for your help!!

The deluxe Beetle for the US market had one key operate both the door locks and the ignition. I believe that most (but not all) standard and deluxe European models came with two sets of keys - one for the door and one for the steering ignition lock. My car is a European deluxe and came with an ignition key that looks similar (but not exactly) to the keys in your top photo. My door key looks like the keys in your second photo. So you might have the correct style keys. Because your car is right hand drive, I'm guessing that it is a standard Beetle that came with a 1200 engine (does your engine # begin with a D?).

Interesting, Thanks.
But no, mine is a F code 1300, which is it's original I believe as the chassis and engine are January '66!

Yes, one key for doors and ignition, and you are right about the style of key it came with. There should be a letter code on the keys. Search for replacement key blanks with that code.
