I need a key

Post by bockegg »

Hi. My new '66 does not have a key. Any suggestion on how to go about getting a key for the ignition and locks?

I've seen listings on thesamba.com and e-bay for SV code key blanks that work in a 66 ignition and door. I think you will need a locksmith to cut the key to fit which may entail taking the parts to the locksmith. I would go to a bonafide locksmith, not a hardware store for this.

I'll try to find the links.

There's a guy on the samba who does rock solid work. Gabriel's lock and key. He has tons of correct key blanks and in most cases can re-key your existing doors, decklid, etc to match one hey. He's on California and you can expect to have 4-6 weeks for turnaround, but if you want it done right, he's the man.

If you don't have an original key you have to send Gabriel one of your parts right?

I believe all he needs is the code stamped into the door handle mechanism, but don't quote that as gospel.

I think so, provided it hasn't been replaced with an aftermarket switch. I've got a complete original matched set on my '60 (ignition, lock and decklid.). I'll check it when I get back home tomorrow and verify that.

My mechanic said that he has a lot of old VW keys sitting around. We are going to try them first to see if one fits.

Re-key with Gabriel

I just spoke with Gabriel about my locks. My ignition and doors uses two different keys. I'd like to make it into one single key to match the ignition.
So, I will be shipping him my two door handles along with the ignition key.

He said he will charge $15 for each lock he is to re-key.
I still need to take the door handles off... Can't wait until I can get to it!
